I'm looking to beef up the rear end on my 2002 Tacoma mini and I've
read that the pre-taco rear ends are a but narrower and bolt right in..

I'm abusing the hell out of my truck and I'm at the stage where I want to run slicks to be able to dead hook off the line.

Has anyone bought an aftermarket rear end setup with disk brakes that bolted right in?
For the disks, I'd like them for 3 reasons..

    .looks
    .easy to work on
.and no need for c-clip eliminators.

I'm hoping to be able to run at the smallest a 15" wheel so I have more tire options..

    Thanks,

    Chris..

Here's my never ending project..

Will try to answer without clouding the waters. (realize I come for 4wd background so no guarentee this info is accurate)

best of my knowledge there is no toy pick up with stock rear discs. The pre-taco rear ends are narrower...

    4wd is as follows

    taco-60"
    pre taco '86-94 58.5"
    79-85 55"

my understanding is that the 2wd are similar

    hilux around 53"
    79-83 55"
    84-88 57"

There are a lot of after market kits out there for the 4wd crowd but most loose the e-brake capability. Most with e-brake capability are using chevy calipers. I am planning on salvage yard diving to find a 5 lug alternative to get to fit with e-brake capability. One thing I have not been able to determine yet is if the mount surface for the bearing pocket on the rear axles is the same for 2wd and 4wd. IF the same you could get a 4wd axle and swap the 2wd axles for the 5 lug. 3rds are interchangable within those and I believe the taco should also a 8" 3rd and as it has a better bearing set up I would keep it.

Other things to consider you will need to move spring perches as well with different width axles but guessing that wont be a big deal for ya!

It's really awkward to see 'newbie' under your name! But welcome to TM!

I think everyone here is in the same boat as over at CT, except its harder to install an Exploder 8.8 in the pretaco - if one chose to do that.

Best bet if you want the narrower pretaco axle width is to find a G code (8") out of an 89-95 and then do a disc conversion.

Are you still running your low boost setup, or are you still thinking LSx swap? You still have the locker, or did you swap to a truetrac yet? I would just put a disc kit on your axle if you're keeping the 2RZ - wasn't Ochizon busting out 1.8 60ft times on his 7.5? I know he was breaking axle shafts with the truetrac, but was able to keep everything together with a locker.

I seriously think the 7.5 will hold all that the 2RZ can throw at it, it will certainly hold more than the W59! haha

I want a narrower rear end so I can stuff wider meats under the ass end..

    Yeah, well, I'm new..

A few things I don't like about the explorer rear end is the offset 3rd, wider axle and nobody has figured out a parking brake arrangement.

G code? How can you tell if it's a G code 8" rear end?

I'm running 5.8psi currently, but I decided to tinker around with the 2RZ a bit longer.. a few things I've bought, but not installed.. megasquirt standalone w/boost control, launch control, sequential fuel/spark board.. It's jumped inside the box to be a plug n play, i just have to rework the wiring on the maf (no more maf) and run the iat sensor for a gm style and put that on the intercooler piping just before the tb.

I just got my wally 255 pump and I'm going with some new Bosch 650cc injectors. Gettin a great deal on em. :)

yeah, I know the W59 is close to being on it's last days, I grind the piss out of 1st>2nd and it's started on it's 2nd>3rd clash once and a while.. :D

    Thanks :waytogo:

The classics never die, I originally wanted a 94 pickup over my Tacoma, but this deal was just too good to pass up.

I got a G code 8" rear end from the pick a part.
    These trucks will have them:
v6 2wd ex cab short bed.
    1 ton 2wd v6 long bed.
I have seen it on 1ton flat beds w single rear wheels.
The drain plug on the bottom is on the drivers side. On the 7.5" its on the passenger side when installed. The biggest noticeable thing is it is heavier. but all you have to do is look at the vin tag in the drivers door and look for the axle code, its right next the to the transmission code.

ohh and all the G codes I have seen have that sensor on top of the 3rd member.
when I ran the part number it was some type of speed sensor input. on my truck its not connected to anything.

and this 8" 3rd member can be retrofitted to fit the 8" mkvIII supra LSD with minimal modification.
you can also run the toyota 3rd member w/ elocker from the 4 runners, with modification to the axle housing itself. Then you just have to work out the electronics.

Are these 8" rear ends the same demensions from wms to wms as.the pretaco 7.5's?
Is there any aftermarket support for these for lockers, lsd's, ect? (not including supra lsd)

What are the gear ratios that are usually found in these?

Any pictures that show the differences? I know you mentioned the drain plug locations..

So the 4x4 6 lug pretaco rear ends are the same except the wheel bolt pattern/hubs/axles?

So if I destroyed a 6lug axle, theoretically I could just take em out, slide in the 5 lug axles into the 4x4's housing, bolt up the 5 lug brakes, drums, good to go?

I know this sounds odd, but the 4x4 stuff is all over because of this being snow country..

LOTS of aftermarket support for 8" 3rds lunchbox lockers, carrier lockers, air lockers, traditional limited slip (clutch packs) not clutch pack limited slip (gears)..... Solid spacers instead of crush seal upgraded axle seals......
If same width there is no reason axles wouldn't just drop in

You might be able to do that, but they would need to be G code (8") 5 lug axles, and then of course weld the spring perches on the bottom side of the axle.

Nice find on the axle! I've had to pass on 2 of those at pick a parts because I didn't have a way to transport it. That wont happen again, haha.

About that speed sensor - the 2wd v6 trucks have a funky steering box that changes the power steering feedback based on vehicle speed. Found that out when I got a steering box from one and couldn't figure out why it had wires sticking out of it.

Nice! sounds like a good fuel management build up! Are you getting a basemap from someone on CT or gonna do everything from scratch? Any tuners in your neck of the woods?

89 Regular Cab. The weirdo with the stock suspension.
If you want to go full aftermarket, you could always go with an aftermarket Ford 9 inch. There's numerous aftermarket places that will make them up to your specs and they can be built up to be as strong as Dana 60's with the right parts. Some of the 4x4 places actually make 9 inch fronts with Dana 60 knuckles. I've seen them narrowed down pretty far to fit tubbed dragsters.

Out this way its hard to find an unmolested axle at a pick a part. If you're not there when they set it down, chances are someone is always waiting and will pull parts off it or take it apart with in a half hour of the truck getting there.

If you see it, don't pass it up because chances are the part wont be there when you come back, lol
