While I had everything removed from the interior I ran across a cheap tilt column with cruise control wheel so here is the "not so quick" install. The reason I say "not so quick" is I read everywhere it's a direct swap no problem. Well, after I had the new column install I went to connect the ignition plug and it was different from mine so then I had to uninstall everything to swap ignition switches. Well the ignition switches are bolted onto the column with tamper proof bolts so then I had to use the dremel tool to cut a slot in the head and use a flat blade screw driver to remove them. Then thinking it would be smooth sailing from there... I was wrong. The diameters of the two columns were different so the ignition mounts wouldn't work. Then I had to disassemble the ignition mount. Which wasn't as bad as I thought, just put the key on acc and then press the button on the underside to remove the key switch and then one screw holds the back electrical assembly.

Then reassembled/reinstalled everything and it was done. If everything would have been a direct swap it would have been a 1 hour job but it turned into 3. Also, I will point out the knuckles between the two were different so luckily I got that too.

You are correct! The ignition switch from the non-tilt to a tilt wheel are definitely different. And, also the intermediate shaft is different. I'm glad you got that part too.

Let us know when you finish off this conversion!

Mine plugged right in. Was from an SR5 Pickup though and not a 4Runner. 89 column, 92 truck. Didn't change the intermediate shaft either

The intermediate shaft had to be changed when going from non-tilt to a tilt because the column tube is different. Not needed if you got the complete setup for this conversion.

@ TwinTurboTaco - I'm assuming that the SR5 pickup was a 2wd, correct? The 4WD and 2WD tilt columns are different.

Nope, 4X4. Possibly different since it was from an 89 column? Or maybe I'm just lucky :nana:

I hear of ppl that need to change the intermediate when converting to power steering as well, but I installed both power steering and tilt using the stock intermediate.
