I know it's usually the opposite, but what all is needed to do the swap and what to look for/do? I know obviously get a manual box but is that it? just remove eveything that deals with power steering?

I believe the center link is different so be sure to grab that too.

Manual rack will definitely steer better than plugged power rack, not so sure about gear boxes however

Just disconnect the hydraulic lines. I had manual on my 82, swapped it to 84+ power steer, then blew a line and been leaving it unhooked for over 3 years now.

center link is the same. all you need is the manual box to swap and to remove all the other p/s components. you can leave the power box and just plug the lines but the manual box has a different steering gear ratio and it makes turning easier.

Does anyone know if you can get rebuild parts for the steering box?

    Specifically the gears...

My suspension is solid! But in certain steering wheel positions I get a lot of play between the wheel and the box. I don't think I can adjust the crush anymore...

Think the gears are worn in the box?

Yep. sounds like the gears are worn. I'm in the same boat. reman gearboxes are listed from most parts places but I don't know about actual availability. I've seen replacement gears for sale but not rebuild kits with bearings and seals.

So there are 2 different answers on the center link. Are they different or not ? I'm in the process of rebuilding the front suspension and steering. My center link is worn out. I have power steering and have not been able to get a definitive answer whether the center link for power steering is same as manual or not. HELP !

If you’re doing an even swap replacing only the center link go with whatever the part number is that’s assigned to your year. If there’s a difference it will show up there.

Plug it. Drive it. Tighten the adjustment screw if you have one and deal with it till it breaks! Lol it should line up, and you'll need an alignment regardless.

Power steering should be only the box itself, not the links or other parts.
I don’t understand why you’re having problems unless your truck is a transition year. Worst case, take your VIN, call Toyota parts department and get the factory part number. Use that number on someplace like rock auto to get a better price. I’ve had good luck by googling the part number itself. Usually several sellers on Amazon will have it.

This guy puts a new spin on just remove the pump and plug the lines. He takes a portion of the P/S hardline and create a short flow path for pressure and fluid from port to port on the box. Should make it easier to turn as it allows everything inside to move pressure correctly.

could also just do a Stabfab rack and pinion conversion
