i havent found anything on this. the previous owner of my truck put rear disc brakes on it and it has the front drums still.it has nice 17" wheels, it would be nice to put some discs up front. something i could get off another car or truck and slap up there without having to get to crazy $. has anyone done this?

yes, use 75-78 spindles on the same side (D-D, P-P) OR 79-83s flipped (D-P, P-D).

I put 77 discs on my 73. Complete easy swap.

    Hi kids

Sorry to drag up an old thread but no doubt it's still better than starting another thread on the same old topic.

I recently purchased an 11/71 RN16 that has very sad brakes and of course want to upgrade to discs rather than 'wasting' the money on reviving the drum brake setup. I understand that 40-series hubs are a straight swap and that the only changes required are:

    * fit complete 40-series hubs/brakes, on opposite sides
    * modification to accommodate larger ball joint

Firstly is anyone able to confirm this, particularly what needs to be done to suit the different ball joint, and secondly can anyone assist with info on other parts of the upgrade. The addition of a vacuum booster and changing to a dual-circuit master cylinder would be worth looking at if there's something straightforward available.

Also are there, in turn, upgrades that can be done to the discs/calipers - eg. an upgrade that would work on the 40-series, but having now the same parts I could use on my RN1x?

i have yet to see anyone actually use the flipped spindles of a 79-83 on a earlier truck.

it's one of those things that is talked about, but nobody seems to try lol

That's my concern... I've been 'playing internet' for 15 years now and it's fair to say that 95% of "bolt in" things aren't "bolt in"!

I found a 84 yota pickup at the junkyard today with disc brakes. These will fit on my 73 right? As long as I swap the spindles?
