i read somewhere that the 8 inch rear in the base model trucks with the 4 speeds wouldnt allow you to swap in a new gearset due to its design. is this true? i hope not since i found a guy here intown with a 4.10 gear set for cheap!
I'll just throw this out: My parts truck has a 7.5" 3.73 rear end. The axle and diff housing are so rusted out that it's dripping lube, but I think the inside is still good. About 185K on the odo. Maybe come spring I should have it apart, just to see how it comes apart. Once I do, I don't know if anybody's in the market for those gears.
Yo sal my bad I gave you a wrong bit of information. The overall length of the 4x's housing is slightly longer then that of the 2wd housing therefore the axles off the 5lug would come up a bit short. It would still grab but would allow for play and potential damage to the third member and splines on the axles. So If you want the lower gearing off a 4x or your 4runner you have to pull the third member and put it in an 8" 2wd housing.Chelu as for you the third members can be swapped to any 8" housing but not the axles
Thanks Malesso, I guess I'm stuck with this 6 lug patten for a while.... I do appreciate the tech info... Sounds like you know your sh!t
My sticker on my 89 says G40 is that a trans ???..... No Ws.....and how would I tell if the trans is out from the truck?
can someone post the link to the codes decipher with with size/ratio etc (again). Seems the original is not working. My '82 longbed (originally 4-speed) third member is way noisy and has ~ 1/2 of play. There's a '87 extended cab in the wreck yard and I want to know if I should buy the whole housing/differential or just can take the third member.
I never go by the codes on old vehicles since things usually get mixed around over the years. Easiest way to tell what rear axle you have is to peek underneath and see where the drain plug is on the housing. Drivers side is 8" which is typical 4 speed equipment with 3.07 gears and passenger is 7.5" with commonly have 3.42's and lower numerically.
Hello Fella's, I'm hoping you can help me out here, I'm from the Supra side of things and I'm trying to go to the 3.5 in the late 80's to mid 90's pre-tacomas/tacomas. I'm trying to figure out if the ring and pinion in the 8" is the same as what the supra uses on these G model transmissions. The only issue is after 89 they moved to this crazy A01A style listing so I need a B01A or G series. Anyone know the teeth on the ring gear and the pinion?
I have a 92 2wd truck. It’s a ministock race truck so no vin num left. I thought it had a w56 but reading here it seems I may have a w55. Is there a way to tell from looking at them?
