So I just bought this 93 pickup and like it a lot but it's my first old stick shift vehicle. When I shift to 3rd gear unless I'm going a very specific speed I feel the gear engage threw the shifter if that statement makes sense. It does not grind though. How normal it's this?
Does it feel similar to shifting into first gear while still rolling? It doesn't sound like anything serious...probably synchros a little worn?
Yeah it's kind of like the first gear thing. I've noticed if I let the rpms come down and hold the clutch for an extra second our two and shift slow it will not do it or not as noticeable.
Get some GL-4 trans gear oil in there. Bleed your clutch lines, ensure it's fully operating. Adjust rod on pedal as req'd for full travel.
ok cool, thanks! That actually answered a question too of what gear oil should I put in there, any thoughts on using synthetic??
If you want to spend the money, Redline MT90 is awesome and is what I use in my trans and what I would recommenced for synthetic. If you don't want to spend the money, I would just stick to regular gear oil. Just make sure its GL4 ONLY, not GL4/GL5. It will cause notchy, crappy feeling shifting and can cause wear in the syncros.
